Sad Lovers & Giants - Headland
Godless Soul
Greeting the dawn of a brand new age
A chance to explore infinite passageways
I've earned this reward it's my destiny
The future is bright and it shines on me
Many times I've wondered if we'd lost control
A pestilence of doubt consumed our plans
You can live on dreams for just so long
But you need success to keep your spirit sailing
Farewell to the walls of this darkened cell
My godless soul has served me well
Now is the time to begin again
I'm hungry for life I will break these chains
I could never bring myself to say we'd failed
The future and the past lay in my hands
You can live on dreams for just so long
But you need success to keep your spirit sailing
Gone are the days of broken promises
Our time is now, we're here at last
You can live on dreams for just so long
But you need success to keep your spirit sailing
Like Thieves
Why must I always
Follow the fatal call
You carry me down
Then you lock my doors
I'm left in an empty room
Waiting for truth
He'll be here soon
And his face is tired and worn
A fading star in the dawn
Like thieves
We live our lives to please
Like thieves
Slowly I'm learning
What I should value most
I'm in remission
I'm a living ghost
Blind faith I've learnt to hide
A vast cathedral deep inside
There's so much that I don't need
I just want to believe
Like thieves
We live our lives to please
Like thieves
And all the world's a mess
Saving art there's nothing left
Don't try to understand
Steal some joy if you can
Like thieves
We live our lives to please
Like thieves
One Man's Hell
Your feet are firmly on the ground
You run on rails of steel
You search for me and I am found
Tilting at windmills
The pressure to conform is so intense
Why must I bow down to common sense
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
What do you see that makes you feel so free?
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
I can't believe that this is all my world will ever be
I'm sand in the machinery
I'm sugar in the fuel
But your sublime viscosity
Is oil for the engine
I'd like to blow this metal box apart
But it's been so long I don't know where to start
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
What do you see that makes you feel so free?
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
I can't believe that this is all my world will ever be
And I tell myself
As the years are rushing past
This is not my dream
And the pain won't last
And I shout my name from the window
But the world cannot hear
I must confess to nothing less
Than feeling rather used
They say that we're all laughing now
Living on plastic
Don't tell me only losers feel the pace
Everyone gets beaten in this race
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
What do you see that makes you feel so free?
One man's hell is another man's heaven on earth
I can't believe that this is all my world will ever be
Alaska
Well it chewed us up and spat us out
Stumbling into daylight
And we learned what dreams are all about
Let us not pretend
I swallowed everything you said
A constant stream of poison
And the blindest visions filled my head
Rejoicing in the dark
And when my spirit flies
I still touch the stars
And when my spirit flies
I know it won't last
Well I've drowned in every shade of blue
Now I know that it's all over
And there's nothing I can say or do
To rearrange the past
For one brief moment in that time
We caught a glimpse of freedom
And I will be dissatisfied
Until I'm there again
And when my spirit flies
I still touch the stars
And when my spirit flies
I know it won't last
Step outside you can almost see an Alaskan sunrise
Like a veil it will lift your consciousness over again
There were times when I lost all touch with the world and its sorrows
In the end only doubt and wasted emotion remain
Well it chewed us up and spat us out
Stumbling into daylight
And we learned what dreams are all about
Let us not pretend
And when my spirit flies
I still touch the stars
And when my spirit flies
I know it won't last
My Heart's on Fire
Time to celebrate
Softly as my spirit wakes from its sleep
Time for sacred choirs to raise the fallen nations
And every voice will sing
Anthems of praise and jubilation
I have failed
All my shallow dreams have come to no avail
But there's still a flame inside and it's burning higher
I will find a way
Through this darkness
My heart's on fire
There's a silver moon
Floating like a glass balloon in the sky
And the promises of dawn seem pale and hollow
We are castaways
Drifting in the night with no tomorrows
I have failed
All my shallow dreams have come to no avail
But there's still a flame inside and it's burning higher
I will find a way
Through this darkness
My heart's on fire
Time to celebrate
Softly as my spirit wakes from its sleep
Time for sacred choirs to raise the fallen nations
And every voice will sing
A thousand joyful hymns
My heart's on fire
Life Will Kill Us
The Martians have stolen my television
But they left my poetry
They're learning about our condition
By watching Coronation Street
Maybe they're working out the final cost
And maybe God is made of candyfloss
Life will kill us all one day
Their starship erased my tapes and videos
They scorched my garden with the heat
Then they made instant friends with my answerphone
They hear the tone but they don't speak
Sometimes I find it hard to understand
Immortal logic has no master plan
Life will kill us all one day
It seems the planet Earth experiment has failed
A dolphin should have topped the evolutionary scale
The Martians left mankind swinging in the trees
Another fifty years and we'll put sewage in their seas
So bring me my shield of whisky and credit cards
Bring me some news from outer space
Our saviour has eyes like a guilty child
But will he ever show his face?
We prize achievement like a flag unfurled
We are the victims of our greedy world
Life will kill us all one day
